Abayomi Olukoju was assassinated by gunmen suspected of being bandits in Ajowa Akoko, Akoko North West Local Government, Ondo State.

According to the Nigerian Tribune, the 49-year-old victim was riding his motorcycle between Ajowa Akoko and Akunnu road when he was ambushed by gunmen on Sunday, May 15.

Olukoju allegedly fled when he saw the gunman, only to run into additional gang members who shot him from behind after he failed to stop.

According to a community source, the deceased was returning to his station in Obajana on Monday to begin duties.

He claimed that other tourists travelling from Abuja spotted Olukoju's lifeless body in a pool of blood.

According to the source, some local police officers and soldiers arrived at the scene of the incident and searched the area, but no arrests were made, and the deceased's body was taken to the mortuary.

Soji Ogedengbe, speaking about the tragedy, bemoaned the community's constant killings, claiming that many inhabitants had been kidnapped and killed in recent months.

According to Ogedengbe, the community's leadership has put in place many steps to curb criminal activity through communal security procedures, but bandits have continued to terrorise residents.

He said that farmers in the region had stopped going to farms and urged security agencies and the state's Amotekun to come to the area's aid, claiming that robbers always come to Akoko from Kogi, which is a border town.

He claims that the advent of heavily armed herders into the area is making life difficult for farmers and residents.

Area Police Commander, Assistant Commissioner of Police Muri Agboola, confirmed the occurrence and said detectives from command had been dispatched into the forest to apprehend the perpetrators.
