Former Secretary to the Government of the Federation Anyim Pius Anyim received 14 votes. Diana Oliver and Samuel Ohuabumwa each received one vote, while the exercise resulted in the cancellation of 12 votes.
In response to his triumph, Atiku pledged to strive for the country's development if elected president.
He described his election as the presidential candidate of Nigeria's opposition party as an honour.
"Today, our wonderful country's rebuilding and unification march continues. I am honoured to be the Peoples Democratic Party's presidential candidate. "I am looking forward to engaging with Nigerians all around the country and spreading the message of optimism and togetherness as we work together to build a better future for one people," he added.
Atiku was the PDP's presidential contender in the 2019 elections, which President Muhammadu Buhari won.
When the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) names its candidate for the 2023 elections next week, his primary opponent will be revealed.
