Her wedding took place just one week after she won the gold medal, making her a two-time women's champion.
Many people assumed she would postpone her wedding because she was in training camp when she signed on for UFC 274. However, she chose to proceed with the fight and the wedding one week later.
Esparza explained why she did not change her wedding date despite being in camp.
She stated: "One week separates the fight and the wedding. I said yes right away when I was offered this fight date. There was no second thought.
I was willing to change my wedding date knowing that my fiance?, friends, and family would understand." Because the wedding is a week after the fight, I had to make a decision.
And, to be honest, I was having a hard time deciding whether or not to change my wedding date. On their wedding day, everyone wants to look and feel beautiful. I went to see my fiance?, and what he told me sealed the deal.
"He said, 'honey, if you have bumps or bruises, that's fine with me, I knew what I was getting myself into when I asked a fighter to marry me.' It's a necessary part of your job. I think you're stunning, but I'm not marrying you for your looks alone. I'm marrying you because. I am so grateful to have this support from my wonderful fiance? Matt. I adore you, my love, and I can't wait to marry you."
During the post-UFC 274 interview, Esparza confirmed she would be taking the belt with her to her wedding ceremony.
She stated: "I'm going to wear this belt down the aisle as my new something. It'll be wrapped around my wedding gown. This belt is the coolest piece of jewellery or accessory you can own."
She did as she said and wore her championship belt over her wedding gown.
