Headies 2022: Organizers File a Petition With The IGP Regarding Portable's Threat To Kill Nominees

The organisers of one of Nigeria's most prestigious awards, the Headies, have sent a petition to the Inspector General of Police, alleging that rave-of-the-moment artiste Habeeb Okikiola, also known as Portable, has threatened the lives of some nominees at the award ceremony.

The petition, dated May 26, 2022, and titled 'Threat to life and acts likely to cause a breach of peace by Mr Habeeb Okikiola, popularly known as 'Portable,' against other nominees of the Headies award,' cited a video posted on the singer's social media platforms in which he said, "Those are my awards." Anyone else who wins, I shall demand that they be executed. I'll ask them to assassinate the individual. They will die if the organisers give my honour to someone else."

The performer has been nominated in two categories for the 15th edition of The Headies, which will take place in the United States of America later this year.

The award's organisers seek a retraction from the up-and-coming artist in the petition. He will also be summoned to the police headquarters to sign a statement promising not to commit any criminal acts that would disrupt the peace.

The organisers of The Headies also asked that Portable print a written apology to all of the nominees in the two categories.

The award's organisers further claimed that if the artist does not comply with their demands, they will not only exclude him from competing in the Headies, but will also 'enforce the law to the utmost extent possible.'4
