In Anambra, gunmen kill two soldiers and set fire to the court and secretariat.


Two military officers were allegedly murdered in a gunfight at 3-3 estate, Nkwelle Ezunaka, near Onitsha, Anambra State, on Sunday night.

During the attack, the gunmen killed two troops, according to a local resident who spoke on the condition of anonymity.

According to the resident, the shooting began around 10 p.m. and lasted for several hours.

The gunmen allegedly targeted some military personnel at a location on the estate where they were stationed.

According to a source, gunshots filled the air, causing terror in the neighbourhood.

"It is true," the insider claimed. Around 10 p.m. yesterday, gunmen attacked the military men securing the housing estate gate. Three hours passed during the assault. "There were two soldiers killed."

The gunmen also went to the Government Reserved Area (GRA) in Onitsha, where they shot intermittently, according to InfoGong.

In a separate incident, suspected arsonists set fire to the Idemili North Local Government secretariat in Ogidi as well as a Magistrate Court.

According to sources, the arsonists broke into the building on Sunday night and burned files and other materials in the secretariat before torching it.

The burned building was also visible in videos and photos circulating online, as were vehicles parked inside the local government secretariat.

The state police command verified the incident and blamed it on unknown arsonists.

"Yes, the incident was confirmed," state police spokesperson DSP Toochukwu Ikenga said. "Our men have been drafted there to restore normalcy."

"Right now, the fire has been out, and the region has returned to normal," Ikenga added.

He also revealed that military soldiers, Nkwelle Ezunaka, were attacked near Onitsha, but that no one was killed.
