The suspect committed the crime in February 2022 and fled the neighbourhood, according to Akeem Adeoye, the command's zone 17 spokeswoman, who revealed this in a statement on Sunday, May 29.
The victim's mother reported the event to the police, while the victim was brought to the hospital for prompt medical attention, according to Adeoye.
He said that investigators from the state were able to apprehend the suspect in Akure, the state capital, in May 2022, just a few months after the crime was committed.
"On the 18th of May 2022, police detectives assigned to Zone 17 Headquarters, Akure, arrested one Afolami Olanrewaju, 32, of Ile Oluji/Oke Igbo L.G.A of Ondo State for defiling a nine-year-old child, name withheld," according to the statement.
"Investigation revealed that on the day he committed the act, the suspect went to the victim's mother's provision business in Ile Oluji, Ondo State, and volunteered to drop off the girl and her siblings at their parents' residence.
"When the suspect arrived at the residence, he instantly had carnal knowledge of the victim and immediately packed his belongings from his home at Ile Oluji and fled."
Detectives' efforts intensified, and he was apprehended in Akure, Ondo State. During interrogation, the suspect admitted to committing the crime.
At Akure's High Court, the suspect was arraigned. He entered a not guilty plea and was remanded in the Nigeria Correctional Service's custody until the outcome of the case.
The lawsuit was postponed until July 27, 2022.
