The state's Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency will now provide psychosocial support to sex offenders in Lagos (DSVA).

The rehabilitation programme for offenders, organised in collaboration with the Nigerian Correctional Service, Lagos State Command, and the Institute of Counselling of Nigeria, aims to reduce sexual and gender-based violence in society.

The Executive Secretary, DSVA, Mrs Titilayo Vivour-Adeniyi, stated in a statement issued on Sunday night, May 15, that the support became necessary to reduce the possibility of incarcerated adult sex offenders committing the same crime when they are reintegrated into society.

On a weekly basis, trained psychologists from DSVA and the Institute of Counseling facilitate the programme, which is held in sessions and groups. Inmates are expected to accept responsibility for their actions and to be educated on sexual health.
