It was said that the event, which happened around 9 a.m. when the market's monthly prayer session was going on, hurt so many people that they ran for safety.
Chidi Ugwumdi, a trader in the market, was there and saw the shooting. He said that it started in the administrative block of the market and that some people lost their goods, money, and cell phones.
A pregnant woman is said to have fallen down on the Nnobi-Awka Etiti Road part of the market and narrowly avoided being hit by a speeding car as she ran away from danger.
Some sources said that some bad guys broke into the market, while others said that the shootings were knockout shots fired from the administrative building by an unnamed market worker.
At press time, it was not clear why the official fired the knockout at a time when things were very dangerous.
But when the Daily Independent got there, people were hanging out in front of closed shops, looking scared and confused.
People who were hurt in the same accident were said to have helped the pregnant woman to the hospital.
