Joseph Ibanga, a lesson teacher, has been sentenced to life in jail for defiling and impregnating a 14-year-old girl.

The defendant, who had no witnesses and testified in his own defence during the trial, committed the crime at No.12, Iresi Street, Orile-Agege, Lagos, between January and March 2019.

Ibanga was said to have been engaged to educate his victim at home since she had been absent from school "for a long period due to slow learning."

When he went to educate the minor where she lived with her aunt, he raped her. She later fell pregnant and gave birth to a child.

The prosecution proved the allegation of defilement against the defendant, Justice Abiola Soladoye of the Ikeja Domestic Violence and Sexual Offences Court declared in his ruling on Monday, June 6.

Soladoye went on to say;

"Because the survivor was a minor, her permission is irrelevant." The defendant had intercourse with the victim at her home and in the defendant's own matrimonial home, according to the evidence presented in court.

She subsequently fell pregnant and gave birth to a child. The defendant's case was strengthened by the medical report.

"The defendant is responsible for the act, and the court has evidence to establish it."

The defendant was recognised as her lesson teacher and the person who had sexual intercourse with her without her consent, according to the survivor.

“The defendant is ungrateful and evil, and he raped the student and taught her gibberish with impunity. Ibanga has made the teaching profession look bad, and this punishment will teach him a lesson and act as a warning to others.

Based on the avalanche of evidence against him, the defendant is found guilty as charged, and he is sentenced to life in prison."
