In Edo, a suspected kidnapper was murdered in a firefight with police.

During a gun duel on the Benin-Lagos Expressway, Edo State Police Command officers killed a suspected kidnapper.

The incident occurred in the Utekon Community, Benin City axis of the expressway, according to the command's spokesperson, Chidi Nwabuzor, in a statement released on Monday, June 20.

"On the 20th of June, 2022, at approximately 0400 hours, the operatives of Egba Police Divisional Headquarters, Benin City, while responding to a distress call, discovered a gang of kidnappers/armed robbers blocking the Benin-Lagos Expressway by Utekon Community, Benin City," according to the statement.

"Immediately, police agents sprang into action and moved to the scene, and when the hoodlums saw the cops, they engaged them in a gun duel, in which the cops neutralised one of the kidnappers while the rest of the gang members escaped with their guns."

To apprehend the fleeing gang members, a coordinated bush combing operation is already underway," he added.
