In Oba, Anambra state's Idemimili local government, the security operative also rescued four kidnap victims.
According to a source, the gang kidnapped two people in Oko, Orumba North Local Government Area, and two more in Ekwulobia, Aguata Local Government Area, on Sunday.
In a statement made available to Daily Trust in Awka on Monday, the Anambra State Police Command Public Relations Officer, DSP Ikenga Tochukwu, confirmed the development, saying that four abducted victims in Neni town in the Anaocha local government area of the state were rescued based on intelligence.
He said that on Sunday, June 5, 2022, Police Operatives working with the Vigilante in the region raided the spot, rescuing the four victims and arresting one Emeka, who was accused of participating in the crime.
According to Ikenga, upon interrogation, he (Emeka) confessed to the crime and brought detectives to his gang's hideout in Oba town, Idemili, where the criminals were involved in a shootout.
He claimed that the gang leader, Chinedu Ajogu a.k.a. Sampolo, was shot and killed, and that five others, including their native doctor, were detained for questioning and prosecution.
The retrieved victims were between the ages of 40 and 60, he said.
He also urged locals to provide more information about the hoodlums in order for the state's tranquilly to be restored.
