Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, the governor of Sokoto State, has clarified the situation around the state's proposed biometric teacher registration programme.

The exercise, according to the governor, was intended to determine the precise number of its active teachers rather than to dismiss any particular teachers.

According to Tambuwal, the clarification was required to dispel the misconceptions of individuals whose business it was to politicise all government actions.

"We are living in a political era; it may soon take on a political significance. They can claim that we are firing instructors.

If you visit the school, you will only find three of the ten teachers listed on our records. The remainder are absent but are still receiving pay, he claimed.

Tambuwal claimed that this was making it challenging to implement teacher advancement, among other reasons.

The governor advised the state's chairman of universal basic education not to put his name on school supplies while addressing at the Thursday delivery of instructional and reading materials to elementary schools throughout the state.

Avoid putting names on our roofs out of sycophancy. Don't publish anything with my name on it. Government is not personalised here," he declared.

The governor applauded donors like UNICEF and BESDA for their assistance in advancing education in the state.

The goods were bought by the state government with help from UNICEF and BESDA, according to Bello Gwiwa, the state commissioner for basic and secondary education.
