On Monday night, unidentified gunmen broke into the Orogwe settlement, where they killed seven people, injured six others, and stole a car.
The dead thieves' remains have been placed in a morgue, according to a statement made on Thursday in Owerri by the police spokesperson for the command, Micheal Abattam.
He gave the assurance that the state's police were devoted to catching the offenders and securing the state.
The following was stated in the statement: "On August 4, at approximately 02:22 hrs., armed bandits in their numbers, invaded the home of a Police Inspector attached to one of the formations in the Command; the bandits who jumped the perimeter wall fence into the compound at Aforukwu, Orogwe in Owerri West Local Government Area, Imo State, rushed to the flat of the Police Inspector, destroyed the iron burglary protector and front door, entered inside the flat, but were taken
The police inspector made no concessions. He immediately informed the Ogbaku Divisional Police Officer, who rapidly mobilised and arrived on the scene. When they arrived, they took up a professional and strategic position and searched the nearby bushes, finding a body, two locally produced pistols, and an Identity Card.
The identity card was found to belong to Chukwuemzie Chukwu, an electrician from Atta in the Ikeduru Local Government Area of Imo State, who was one of the bandits that was neutralised.
It will be recalled that a few days prior, on August 1, 2022, at approximately 200 hours, the same bandits arrived in a black Lexus Jeep with no licence plate and three motorcycles carrying two people each. They opened fire on the building belonging to Sir Chima Ogbuehi, a resident of Lagos, at Orogwe in Owerri West LGA of Imo State, killing seven people and injuring six more. Coincidentally, the Police Inspector resides only a pole away from the location of the last attack.
"In the meantime, coordinated efforts are being conducted to apprehend the other robbers who escaped while the two corpses have been evacuated and placed at the Federal Medical Center, Owerri. Because of the varying degrees of bullet injuries they sustained, they are unable to travel very far.
