MBS, the Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia, was appointed prime minister by royal decree on Tuesday, September 27.
Saudi King Salman authorized a reorganization of the cabinet, giving his son the position that the king had previously held.
Under King Salman, MBS previously held the positions of defense minister and deputy prime minister. His younger brother, Khalid bin Salman, who was previously the deputy defense minister, has taken over as defense minister in his place.
A new cabinet led by Prince Mohammed bin Salman, the kingdom's crown prince and de facto ruler, kept Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman as the country's energy minister.
Prince Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud, the minister of foreign affairs, Mohammed al-Jadaanand, and Khalid al-Falih, the minister of investments, all retained their places in the new cabinet.
The change comes as a result of a deal reached on Sunday, September 25, in which Germany would get natural gas and diesel from the United Arab Emirates as part of a "energy security" pact to replace Russian supplies.
At a signing witnessed by German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, Emirati Industry Minister Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber described it as a "landmark new deal" that "reinforces the rapidly increasing energy collaboration between the UAE and Germany."
